which the Rhine becomes a place of searching for traces of global or colonial trade routes. How did your dealing with this come about?\u003C/p>",{"type":176,"text":179,"depth":151},"\u003Cp>Romy Nína Rüegger: \u003Cem>Synthetic Stream Plays\u003C/em> began in 2017 following an invitation to \u003Cem>New Swiss Performance Now! \u003C/em>at the Kunsthalle Basel. When the librarian of the Kunsthalle heard about the research I was doing, she drew my attention to the yearbooks of the Kunsthalle, which contain a record of an exhibition of the Basel Evangelische Missionsgesellschaft in 1908. I also discovered pictures of this exhibition, showing replicas in the form of huts and life-size puppets of what the caption describes as “village situations from Western Africa.” For the exhibition, the walls of the Kunsthalle were painted white, probably for the first time—a show without bourgeois wallpaper, without ivy, without benches for picnicking. The exhibition of the Basel Mission introduced the white cube of modernism and 20\u003Csup>th\u003C/sup>-century contemporary art to the Kunsthalle Basel, where it then remained.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>During the pandemic, I received a request from the 2021 ARé Performing Arts Festival in Yerevan to make an artistic contribution to the festival’s web platform with \u003Cem>Synthetic Stream Plays\u003C/em>. I held long discussions with the curator on why precisely this project could be interesting for a country in the state of war. She persuaded me with her arguments and I produced the video, which also reflects on the relationship between performance, retelling and video.\u003C/p>",{"type":176,"text":181,"depth":10},"\u003Cp>Julia Wolf: The white cube became the standard for presenting artworks. In 1976 the Irish artist and critic Brian O’Doherty, in his essay “Inside the White Cube,” criticized that the white gallery space suggests alleged neutrality and transparency. Colors and their politics do not only play a significant role in art and its presentation, but also in the industry. You have been familiar with this topic for quite a while. Can you tell us more about it?\u003C/p>",{"type":176,"text":183,"depth":151},"\u003Cp>Romy Nína Rüegger: Since 2010 I have been dealing with the development of the textile industries in Europe, which were a key component of the global, early-capitalist slave trade. Initially in the region of Basel, then in the Alpine region as well, particularly in Glarus. During the course of its development, the textile industry in these regions was based on, among other things, the synthesizing methods that emerged at the same time as the chemical industries in Basel. What also took place in this period was the strengthening of the modern bourgeoisie and the way in which it created and financed representative spaces for itself, such as art halls.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>For \u003Cem>Synthetic Stream Plays\u003C/em> in 2018, I left the Kunsthalle Basel empty and invited the audience to a performative walk through downtown Basel ‘heading Nantes’—the place where most ships owned, loaded and insured by Basel-based companies cast off. A walkable monument at the quay commemorates the slaves on whose submission and exploitation the wealth of many enterprises in Basel is based.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>During the walk, joint storytelling and the desire to share knowledge were at the fore. I posed the question of how this smallest format of a one-on-one performance, a staged conversation, can become a site of public remembrance. Less as a replacement and more in the sense of challenging the lack of commemorative monuments in Basel’s public space. At the same time, the walk questioned the format of performance. What was important in terms of the dramaturgy and the concept was that the Kunsthalle allowed me to also use all meta-textual elements, such as the event description and the invitation emails.\u003C/p>",{"type":176,"text":185,"depth":10},"\u003Cp>Julia Wolf: You ultimately continued with this echo of the stories of colonial entanglement and transregional exploitation processes at the Museum Tinguely. Where did this continuation lead you in the course of your engagement with the Rhine?\u003C/p>",{"type":176,"text":187,"depth":151},"\u003Cp>Romy Nína Rüegger: In the frame of the show \u003Cem>Territories of Waste\u003C/em>, which was held at the Museum Tinguely in Basel in 2022/23, I continued the developed format of a choreographed walk along the Rhine. Based on specific research, I discussed trade routes, river ecologies and colonial continuities with the participants. The performance played with our present relation to rivers—as places of recreation, bathing and cleanliness. The stories of the participants were actively included in the subsequent walks. For example, the memories of the chemical accident in the Schweizerhalle varied between dark red and light red; there were stories of leaving the city and of collectively politicizing and advocating for the river from that moment on. Several participants showed me new paths, for example, to the gas and oil tap from where a large part of Switzerland is supplied with these resources—as long as the river carries enough water for the freight ships to navigate it.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Furthermore, questions about where the river starts and ends, if we understand it based on personal rights, with which the anthropocentric constitutional discourse can be challenged, were substantiated in a variety of ways, often also in correspondence with the current weather and water level.\u003C/p>",{"type":176,"text":189,"depth":10},"\u003Cp>Julia Wolf: Feminist and postcolonial theorists stress that ecological crises in our times are closely connected to the history of colonialism and slavery. My impression is that your performative artistic approach is not only a ‘looking back’ in a historical sense. I find that the joint dialog that these walks enable also contain an ethical listening, lingering and insistence—in the sense of Donna Haraway’s staying with the trouble. During your residency in Stein am Rhein, you were faced with a different, far more ‘idyllic’ part of the Rhine. How did that influence your approach?\u003C/p>",{"type":176,"text":191,"depth":151},"\u003Cp>Romy Nína Rüegger: The possibilities of what can be narrated are huge in this section of the Rhine as well, between the Rhine Falls and lower Lake Constance. In this region, I was confronted with memories of my time in high school in a small Swiss town in the 1990s, which was characterized by homophobia and xenophobia. In addition to places, sounds, plants, persons, waves, and winds, I also visited the town archive in Stein am Rhein, where I asked for documents listing the partially racializing or exoticizing house names in Stein am Rhein and how they changed over time—until they became the present names on the houses in the old part of town. Historical lists on customs duties when passing the bridge in Stein provide direct indications of the trade with colonial goods, such as coffee and cotton—cotton trade that I was able to connect with the existing linen trade in the upper Lake Constance region.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>I looked at the houses and the way they are painted, met the last fisherman who is responsible for rewilding the banks between Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein and spoke with the farmers at the weekly market. An employee of the foundation—who has migration experience and lives in Stein—drew my attention to a shoe factory whose production was decisively made possible by so-called guest workers. The wealth of the Jakob and Emma Windler Foundation is linked to the importance of the synthesis method for the industry in Basel and the ETH in Zurich, as I learned in Museum Lindwurm, which belongs to the foundation and is dedicated to the living conditions of the bourgeoisie in the 19\u003Csup>th\u003C/sup> century.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>I visited the former cotton printing plant in Diessenhofen and, in the Museum Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen, I found models to circumnavigate the Rhine Falls—which were meant to contribute to connecting Lake Constance with Basel and thus preparing the entire Rhine up to Lake Constance for industrial trade and the shipping of resources.
