2024, Willimann/Arai want to continue their research on the element nitrogen by focusing more intensively on the common yellow lichen (Xanthoria parietina). This lichen species is widespread in intensively farmed regions such as Stein am Rhein. In contrast to other lichen species that suffer from air pollution, the yellow lichen benefits from the high nitrogen content in the air, which has led to a sharp increase in its population in recent decades. \u003Cbr />Dyeing with lichen is a centuries-old tradition. The two artists use their time at the residency to experiment and dye with yellow lichen according to old recipes in order to produce the particularly rare and therefore valuable shades of blue.
